Can a black tattoo be gone over with white ink to lighten to a grey?

I have a solid black tattoo. I want to lighten certain pieces of it. Will white ink lighten the black ink? Has anyone had this done, or are there any tattoo artists that have done it?
I should have said would it lighten it to white or grey. I don't care unnecessarily on the color or shade, just if you could go over it. Has anyone had this done?

I don't know what these people are talking about. White ink WILL lighten black. However, it probably won't get you to effect you were looking for. I doubt it would look good and it will end up looking kind of mushy. It's a better idea to just wait until the tattoo fades and make some if it dark instead of trying to make some of it lighter.
