Mother's Day and Laurel Burch Tote

My mom loves Laurel Burch. Tote, earrings, shirts—you name it, she's gotta have it. That's why this Mother's Day, it's all her, cats, pampering, and yes—Ms. Laurel Burch.  It's a surprise. I've been planning this for months—since Christmas.  You see, since my mom loves Ms. Burch so much, I thought everyone else would get her a Laurel Burch tote or something. But I guess everyone thought the same thing so she didn't get anything from her favorite designer.

So after church on Mother's Day, we'll take mom to lunch. Then my sisters and I are going to take her to this spa that just happens to be open on Sunday by appointment only. I already ordered her Laurel Burch cat flip-flops she can wear as a surprise. I found them at kraftykatscuriosityshop.com for a bargain.  The salon also has some Burch merchandise we'll buy her. Afterwards, it'll be a wine tasting with the rest of the family and dinner. I instructed everyone to go to kraftykatscuriosityshop.com and buy her something Burch related to make up for Christmas.

I asked mom why she loved Laurel Burch so much after Christmas dinner, noticing she was upset. The story is pretty sad. Her grandmother, my great grandmother, used to paint. The paintings looked very similar to Laurel Burch's cats and animals—not the same, just similar. My grandmother wanted to be an artist as a young girl but her parents wouldn't let her. They pretty much forbade her to draw and paint and told her to focus on chores and finding a man who would support her. So she drew and painted in secret, when they were sleeping or at work. She ended up marrying my great grandfather, who was very mean and abusive. And she still practiced her art in hiding. My mother caught her once when she was very little.  And on that day, my great grandfather caught her…and beat her. He beat her for lying and not having dinner on the table at six sharp. He beat her so hard she fell down the stairs and into a coma. She died a day later. I knew she died in an accident, but I didn't know the details.

Laurel Burch reminded my mother of her grandmother—a woman who had to hide and could never express herself. So from then, as a young, young girl, my mother promised to honor her grandmother with art. Luckily for her, my grandparents were very supportive. And when Laurel Burch made her debut, my mom fell in love.  That's why this Mother's Day has to be extra special--to honor her and my great grandmother.
