Purse Puppies - The End of the Trend

Fashion wannabe's take note; purse puppies are thankfully no longer in style.  I realize Paris Hilton and other big diva's made the cute little pups a number one fashion accessory but you do not need to participate any further. I know you love showing them off at the mall and fancy clubs but they are now a thing of the past. You should consider the dog park; there are very nice people there.

The demand for the purse dog is on a down-hill slide and puppy mills aren't making much money these days. When people realized their adorable purse pals had to be taken care of that was a big turn off for many. Most weren't accustomed to picking up poo and when their Prada shoes got chewed on, that was the end of the line. They became so tired of the purse problems that they started abandoning them at high-profile events and public places causing animal shelters to fill with tiny dogs that had big problems, all thanks to their owners.

The breeds of choice for the purse slinging crowd are: Maltese, Teacup Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas and Bichon Frise. The breeders assured everyone that they could provide the smallest dogs possible. They were even kind enough to let the puppies go home with the buyers before they were ready to be taken from their mothers. Now we hear mention of dogs with health and behavior issues, I wonder why that happened. Some dogs reached a whopping eight pounds which was far too much for some purse straps to handle so they were discarded and traded him in for newer, lighter models.

Those that still have their dogs should be commended for not giving up on them. But the behavior issues need to be addressed. A dog trainer can seriously help put an end to all the bad habits. The chewing, barking, separation anxiety and aggressive behaviors should be dealt with immediately. As a responsible dog owner, it is your job to teach your dog how to behave properly. Many people use trainers as they can help you better understand the behaviors you are dealing with and why.   

Letting your dog run free and enjoy the outdoors is a must but please make sure he has an invisible fence or some type of containment to protect him. Thieves love little purebred dogs and they will coax them right into their cars and drive away.  A fence and the right training would keep your dog in your yard safe and sound where he belongs.

Some advice if you are considering getting a purse puppy: dogs live twelve years or more so owning one is a commitment. Dogs should be taken to the vet on a regular basis, they should be trained, they should be protected with a fence and allowed to run and play. Puppy mills are not a good place to shop, always find a reputable breeder. And last, any trends that use animals as fashion accessories should be ignored.
