If you've ever filed for SSDI...?

How far in the process did you have to go to get approved (first time, appeal, court), and what is your disability? I've heard most get denied the first time, but what has YOUR experience been?

I have ocular muscle control issues (fourth and sixth nerve palsy, and downbeat nystagmus) that completely distorts what I see, except for what is literally directly ahead and within a few feet. That very small range is corrected to 20/25 and 20/20 with prescription eyeglasses. (Tested separately due to double vision) I'm currently in the final initial determination stage (I see their opthalmologist on Monday, which is the final step before determination). Anyone have a similar situation? Any tips? Thanks in advance...Blessings
ps This is for SSDI...I'm thirty something and have worked since High School. I've just recently developed the sixth nerve palsy, which pushed me past the abilty to adapt enough to continue working. Thanks

Most people get turned down at least once.
I was turned down the first time,as well as my appeal.I was finally approved after going to court with a lawyer.The entire process took about 2 years.
My disabilities are a leg amputation and severe scoliosis.I also have neurofibromatosis,which is similar to what the elephant man had.I was in my late 30's also when I applied.I worked as a nurse for 20 years before applying but could no longer be on my feet like I needed to be to perform my job.
Just stick with it and appeal if you are turned down.It seems that most people finally get approved when they reach the court hearing stage.Once you do get approved,it is tough to survive on the benefits you get,especially when you are younger and haven't
had as many years of work as someone older.
