In the fear and uncertainty following 9/11, people didn't question it; they were desperate for any feeling of security. But as the fog of panic finally began to clear, the manipulation was obvious, and it was reprehensible.

It was a knife to Jefferson's back--a stab to the heart and soul of this country-- and it was so revolting that no Republican candidate, moderate or not, had a shot in 2008. Not even the coalition of single-issue religious voters could keep the party afloat.

I, for one, found that comforting.
