Quick 10 Fur Do Nots

Your fur loves the same atmosphere as you.  You do not like being hot.  You do not like humidity.  You will not be around a moldy place for long.  You will not put your face near a vent blowing hot or cold air.  Note: Slightly colder is better than slightly hotter.

Do not cover your fur coat with a plastic cover

Your fur needs to breath.  A good idea to cover your fur in a travel bag is when you are traveling for a few days.  Also if you are doing some home remodeling the plastic travel bag can act to protect your fur from dust, odor and other particles.  In this situation, a bed sheet works as well.  

Do not wait to remove stains

Stains caused by lipstick, sweat, fat, etc. are better cleaned immediate because they expand with time.  So far I have come across one product that does the job well, Lana's Tough Stain Solution.

Do not spray your fur with any chemicals

Spraying your fur with bug spray or putting perfume on after you put on your coat, decreases the life of your fur.  The harmful chemicals in each not only seep down to the leather making brittle but also can take away from the natural full look a fur has.

Do not hang fur on normal hangers

Fur is elastic and as you hang it on a small rod, it starts to stretch and start to tear over time.  A good rule of thumb is to find a hanger that's the width of your shoulder. 

Do not use any type of glue to fix it in any circumstance

There are specials glues sold to fix your leather.  There are some great products out there to fix leather products, however the leather you buy and the leather underneath your fur have completely different properties and behave quite differently.  There a few solutions to this problem and they are discussed in the FURGENT CARE post.

In either scenario the heat will penetrate to the leather and cause it to dry and tear eventually.

Do not store your fur in the closet right after it has been exposed to rain or snow

Dry your fur in an open space before storing it.

Do not use pet cleaners or dry cleaners to clean your fur products

Either of these approaches (dog shampoo is still my favorite) will ruin your fur.  Please turn to a professional or purchase a fur home cleaning kit that is designed to clean natural fur.

Do not let the odor linger

Smells like to travel.  At first the fur will protect itself and the smell will just sit on the hairs.  At this point the smell is easily remedied with limited cost and effort.  However, as time goes on, the smell will travel to the leather and will seep into it.  Then the antidote is a much lengthier process of removing the lining to clean the fur inside and out.  Oh, and the price goes up too.

What is the very best vacuum cleaner for picking up dog fur from a carpet?

I have two very large Labradors. I presently vacuum 3 times a day and I would like a vacuum that is bagless and actually removes the dog fur from the carpet on the first run. I tried the Oreck and it is a great vacuum, but for as much as I need to use it, it is impossible for me to keep buying the bags for it. They are expensive and I can actually fill one a day so that's out of the question. It's just not feasible for me to continue using a vacuum with bags.
