Has anyone any advice for dealing with a 5 year old Lakeland Terrier?

He is the most loveable dog in the world.
But, whenever i look after him, when my parents go away, he causes me so much stress, when i go out.
My parents are retired, so they rarely leave him for more than 2 hours at a time.
I never do either, but he seems to panic so much more, when i go out, than they do. He bit my leg the other day, when i tried to leave the house. He looks for the signs that i am going out, getting my handbag, picking up the keys etc.
I have found it easier to go out the back door, rather than the front door.
But then i can`t lock it, from the outside!!!

He is the third Lakeland that we have had, and we had no problem with going out and leaving the previous two, for short periods of time. But, he is totally different. He is a lot more sensitive, and seems to have a real problem with me going out, more than anyone else.
Any advice welcome.

This dog obviously has Separation Anxiety. There are ways to resolve this permanently, however when your parents return they may not keep up the procedure which I would normally suggest. Try the following instead.

If he looks for signals that you are going out, flood him with these signals. Pretend that you are going out by doing what you normally do, then take your coat off and put your handbag and keys away. Do this over and over again.

Dogs feel more secure if they are confined to one room. If they have the run of the house they think that they are responsible for guarding the whole house, consequently it's kinder to confine them. When you do need to leave the house don't make a fuss of him or make fond farewells, just walk out. You should leave him in a room where he cannot observe your departure.

You should also take him for a long walk before you go, it will also help if you hide a few bits of dried dog and he will occupy himself seeking this.
