You buy supplies, you experiment and make mistakes and end up wasting money on things that you can't sell. You need to get a business license, you may need a manufacturing license (especially if you are making something potentially hazardous like candles (fire danger from igniting hot wax) or using toxic substances (Dyes or chemicals). You will also need to get good liability insurance in case one of your products causes damage to someone and they sue you.

You also need to spend time and money creating marketing materials like brochures, price lists, a website and business cards and then you need to spend time marketing the products. For most people there just aren't enough hours in the day to develop, make and sell their own products and make a profit.

For people who have never run a business before it is usually is better to start out as an independent representative or distributor marketing another company's products. You have your own business but the company has already invested the time and money to develop good products. They have the proper manufacturing licenses and liability insurance. The start up costs are usually very low (under $100) and you can start marketing the products immediately to start earning income right away.

After a couple of years you will learn a lot and develop some marketing skills. Then if you still want to start making your own products you will have experience in that area and won't be trying to learn everything all at once. As an independent rep or distributor you will have spent your time building a customer base, so if you decide to open a new business making your own products, you will already have built a customer relationship with a list of people to notify about your new business which will help you create a customer base for your own products much faster.
