About the Designer

She was born in 1962 and completed her education at the Arizona State University. She then earned an internship at the then famed fashion magazine – Mademoiselle. She was recruited as a trainee and was assigned at the accessory department. It could be well understood that she was fairly influenced with the ladies accessories back then and hence decided to create a new brand and give it a shot. The Americans lapped it up – the spread was generous and the brand was one to be identified with the country! Now they had a ladies accessory brand that was domestic to the market!

Just like a famous cartoonist, who created the world famous ‘mouse', she also would sketch designs of handbags and shoes, often inspired by her mother's good range of purses and clutches. Patience saw her to the very zenith of the American fashion industry! Today, she has an enviable range of accessories and other items under her name and they are doing well!

Kate's most iconic design includes the diaper bag for new mothers. Yes, this is one piece of innovation in the fashion industry which was lapped up pretty fast by new mothers. Also, this became a great gift for the uber class of the society – fashion and utility both rolled into one! The bag was perhaps as fashionably designed as her other handbags if not more. It was way back in 1993, when she first materialized this concept; understandably, it was a rage! It was before she became Kate ‘Spade' (prior to her marriage in 1994). Now here was a bag that was great luxury at a competitive price – actually much lower that its imported counterparts.

One of the biggest problems is that the fashion industry faces today is piracy. This has affected the sales of Kate Spade too. Because her luxury handbags and shoes are not as pricey as the other brands, it creates a sort of black market where there is rampant theft of original designs. Making the bags a bit practical also means to sacrifice a bit of the ‘luxury' touch. Actually this is hardly visible, but then pirates just need a design to copy.
