carry-on luggage rules for US?

i have a typical 24" x 14" carry-on but there is no way in hell i'm fitting all my things in there. my dad says i can bring a purse but do these "satchels" count as a purse? i got it front old navy a long time ago and i basically use it as a purse at the moment.

anyway- i'm going to visit my aunt in nj and i'm from florida. my parents dont want me to spend any money checking in luggage because we've had a bad experience with airlines losing our bags!! so i'm just bringing a carry-on.

my question is--- can i stuff my carry-on suitcase AND use my satchel for my laptop, ipod, feminine products, wallet, etc. i DO use it like a purse, i don't put books in it or anything big besides my laptop? or i have to fit everything into my suitcase and just use a regular size purse? i'm flying Delta btw. also, will they make me throw out my contact lenses case and solution and eye drops? i'll be really pissed if they do!

You are allowed one carry-on and one personal item. The personal item does NOT have to be a purse. I always bring a rolling suitcase as a carry-on (to be stowed in the overhead compartment) and a shoulder bag similar to the one you have pictured as a personal item (to be kept under the seat in front of me). As long as it's smaller than your carry-on suitcase and no bigger than, say, a diaper bag, you will be fine carrying that on as well (Delta doesn't list its personal item dimensions, just says they should be of similar or smaller size than a purse, briefcase, camera bag or diaper bag):

You can pack things however you like, it won't matter what items you pack in which bag as long as they are not prohibited.
