Granite-signature rock of the planet Earth

Granite is a common type of intrusive, felsic, coarse-grained igneous rock. It can be regarded as the signature rock of the planet Earth since only Earth has kind of rock type in abundance.  'Granite' term originates from a latin word 'Granum' meaning 'grain' because it's granular. Usually granite have a medium to coarse grained texture and consist quartz and feldspar, with or without a wide variety of other accessory minerals such as magnetite, garnet, zircon and apatite mineral. Rarely a pyroxene is present. Quartz and Feldspar give granite a light colour from pinkish to white; however the light background colour is punctuated by darker accessory minerals.

Granite is formed from magma which cools off very slowly deep inside the crust of the earth. The size of the crystal depends upon the rate at which the granite has cooled: the slower the cooling process, the larger the crystals and vice-versa. Granite is considered a prestige material used in projects in order to produce impressions of elegance and quality. Granite forms a major part of the continental crust in earth. It is widely distributed throughout and is considered as the most abundant basement rock. Owing to its massive occurrence (lacking internal structures), hardness and toughness it is extensively utilized as a construction stone. Granite stone is typically the hardest of the dimensional stones. Nowadays, it is being widely used in modelling projects such as vanity and kitchen countertops. Once granite is quarried, cut, polished as well as sealed it is almost impervious to scratches, heat, etching, staining or weathering. Besides this, granite has a significant usage in creating curling stones; it has been long appreciated by the climbers for its soundness, steepness and friction.

On account of its rich mineral colours and elegant patterns it has been used to create magnificent solid ornaments. Granite is tough since its mineral grains have grown tightly during a very slow cooling period. Its average density of granite is between 2.65 and 2.75 g/cm3. The rock is found in large quantities on the continents where the Earth's crust has been deeply eroded. Based on thorough study of their origin and types students have classified granites into three or four categories I-type (igneous) arise from melting of pre-existing igneous rocks, S-type (sedimentary) from melted sedimentary rocks, M-type (mantle) evolve  directly from deeper melts in the mantle and A-type (Anorogenic) are a special variety of I-type granites. The prices of granite depend on several aspects of the stone such as size, availability, place of origin as well as demand.
