Personally I thought it was funny but have been quite struck by the answers that reveal more about the answerers' hang ups and racism than can possibly be revealed by Michelle's joke- on both pro BO and anti-BO sides. Would you feel different if Bill Clinton called Hillary an accessory? Or if Hillary called Bill the same?

Why do you assume it was a joke?

It sounds perfectly consistent with her event coordinator saying "we need more white people." It's all about properly accessorizing.
