What's the best sewing machine?

My step mom is an interior designer. On the side, she makes bags, pillows, table cloths, aprons, anything that can be sewn. You name it. Recently, she's gotten into making clutches (small purses) and they're such a big hit that she's come up with a logo and a tag to put inside and selling them. The problem- she has had the same sewing machine since she was in high school. My dad and I are teaming up to buy her one for her birthday this year.
Criteria-
It has to be user friendly
Relatively heavy duty
Can embroider
cuts the thread when you stop
something not too incredibly expesive

Please give suggestions of ones you've used before so that YOU know they're great. Not just what the box says. Just names of specific models would be a huge help!
Is there a certain model that Brother makes that has the qualities that I want?

I'd be looking at two machines; one a "regular" sewing machine, and one an embroidery only machine. You can't sew while you're waiting for an embroidery design to stitch out if you only have a combo machine.

I'd probably be looking at the computerized Juki models for myself -- but I don't do machine embroidery. I have not had the chance to try out the F-600, but that's the machine I'm currently in lust with, mostly because of the buttonholes and the box feed.) If she only needs straight stitch (and it really sounds like that might be all she needs, considering it's home dec type sewing mostly), then I'd be looking at the TL-98 series -- that has the advantage of both speed and the heavy clamping pressure of an industrial, and the great variety of cheap industrial feet and folders available for it. http://www.jukihome.com/

The other point I'd strongly make: most of us who have sewn for awhile develop some very strong preferences for how machines should be set up and work. Trying to buy a sewing machine for someone else is like trying to buy them shoes -- you may know the size, but you can't tell how they actually feel on her feet. So please, please consider giving her a budget and a hug and letting her choose her own machine.
