Can I bring a purse, laptop bag, and carryon bag on the plane?

I am flying on an international flight through Continental. The rules say that you can bring one carry on bag and one "personal item." I want to bring my carry on bag, laptop bag, and my purse. Does the purse count as a carry on item?

The purse and laptop bag would both be personal items - you can only bring one of them if you're also bringing a carry-on bag. If you can, put your purse or laptop into the carry-on.
