What shirt fabric to use?

I went to Joanns recently looking for good 100% cotton, like the material a basic T-Shirt is made from. They had the quilting fabrics which were 100% cotton, but felt nothing like shirt material. I went through their other sections and could only find satin, muslin, denim, etc. and patterned fabrics. I asked the staff, but they shrugged.

Does Joanns (or Michaels) have the type of fabric I'm looking for? Or do I have to settle with the quilting fabric?

T-shirts are typically made of jersey (or interlock in the better shirts). And yes, it doesn't surprise me that you couldn't find any... it's a craft store, and if you're lucky, sometimes there's decent fabric there and sometimes someone on staff even knows something about fabric.
