Walking down any of the main streets of Tel Aviv, Israel you will find countless options for street food to enjoy. These foods are cheap, overflowing with flavor, and great to eat when you are on the go.

Burekas, Bagels, and other Breads

Burekas are an Israeli variation on the Turkish börek, a savory flaky pastry made with potato, cheese, and many other fillings. You can find burekas around the city and at many of the street markets. Near the intersection of Bograshov and King George is a bureka counter that, in addition to burekas, offers bagel toast, other bread products with savory fillings, donuts, and cakes.

The Israeli bagel toast is nothing like the American bagel that you might know. It is flat, has no whole, and covered in sesame seeds. This particular stand offers pizza bagel toast with cheese and tomato sauce that they heat in the oven for you.  Warning, it is delicious and addictive!

Falafel, Shwarma, and Sabich

When you are not in the mood to sit down in a Tel Aviv restaurant there are many falafel, shwarma, and sabich (sometimes all three) places around almost every corner. Israel is famous for its falafel, fried chickpea balls, and shwarma, slow cooked meat cut from a rotating spit, both eaten in pita or the bigger laffa bread. However, sabich is often overlooked.

Sabich is a sandwich of fried eggplant and hard-boiled egg that comes from the Iraqi Jewish tradition. It is a somewhat healthier alternative to shwarma and great if you are all falafel-ed out, which can easily happen in this country. Sabich is also eaten in a pita with the same fix-ins that come with falafel and shwarma such as tahini and salad.

Juice Bars

Though technically not a street food, fresh juice from one of the various juice bars on the streets of Tel Aviv is a delicious source of sustenance. They offer mixtures of juices and smoothies made from almost any fruit you can think of. One most unique fruits at juice stands in Israel is the pomegranate, which is especially popular around Rosh Hashana when it is ripe. Walking around Tel Aviv, which is usually sweltering, you will find yourself craving some refreshing fresh squeezed juices from the many juice stands that you will pass.
