Sewing question - Repairing crushed velvet - advice please?

I have a Dennis Basso faux fur throw with a crushed velvet back. Most people who bought this have the same problem, as you can see if you read the reviews at qvc.com - the seams have come apart where the velvet was joined together.

I am not a seamstress and I don't have a sewing machine, but I am capable enough to figure out how to hand sew it.

I am looking for advice on what kind of stitch to use, what kind of thread to use, and how much material should I give the seams? It looks like they left less than a quarter inch where they joined 2 pieces of velvet all the way around. If there were an inch or more, would it make a difference or would the fabric still be too delicate?

I was considering using a tight whip stitch with some nylon thread.

How would you repair it?

PS - replacing it is pointless because it will happen again on the new one.

When threading the needle, use two strands for the stitching.

A back stitch is sewn when the stitches will not be seen on the right side of a garment or project. It is an excellent hand stitch to sew a seam because it is one of the strongest and redundant stitch making it very reliable. A back stitch is a strong stitch to join two pieces of fabric.

I've had this happen to me even in clothes, seams like they use a cheaper thread and is so disappointing to pay for something and not get what I paid for.
